Expanding EconomicВOpportunity:ВIraq

CDC, Citizens Network for Foreign Affairs (CNFA),Вand International Executive Service Corps (IESC) are implementing an agreement awarded by USAID/Baghdad to the Volunteers for Economic Growth Alliance (VEGA). The agreement calls for the IraqВPrivate Sector Development Initiative toВdeliver a package of training, technical assistance, consulting, capacity buildingВand business entrepreneurship services to Iraq.ВThe InitiativeВbegan on July 2010, with the goal toВpromote the expansion of a competitive and efficient private sector in the country.В

The Initiative is focused on:

  • Conducting industry assessments and sectoral surveys targeting 10-20 business sectors;
  • Offering an aggressive program of business training for 10-20 targeted industry groups, making use ofВtraining centers located throughout Iraq and nearby countries;В
  • Delivering technical assistance directed toward small businesses and micro-enterprises;
  • Specifically training bankers and lending officers to modernize and upgrade banking policies and practices so that they match current international standards;
  • Providing training on contracting/procurement with multinational and large domestic firms, as well as withВdonor and reconstruction programs and military projects in the country;
  • Providing business training to the clients of micro-finance providers;
  • Implementing a small grants program.

Security in-country:

The security of all Expert Advisors and program staff working within Iraq will be of primary consideration and may limit some volunteer-delivered programming in the project’s initial stages.ВFor additional security, some activities may take place in Jordan.

Currently, assignment locations are scheduled to take place in northern Iraq, in Kurdistan. While in Arbil, Advisors will reside in a local hotel and be accompanied by a private security detail.

We understand that this program may not be of interest to most volunteers. However,Вwe believe that CDC’s mission includes contributing to the reconstruction effort in Iraq even in, and perhaps especially during, such difficult times.

Programmatic Activities:

We are currently receiving scopes of work on an ongoing basis. If you are interested in participating on assignment with this Initiative, please check the Open Assignments page and contact us expressing your interest. Please e-mail us with a Word attachment of your resume, indicate the assignment name in which you are interested, your industry/skill area of expertise, your dates ofВavailability, and tell us whether you would like to participate as a volunteer or as a paid consultant.
